FTP Test and Training Zones: Why Your Watch Numbers Lie and You Need an IRONMAN Coach
You know the drill. You suffer through 20 minutes “in the red,” your lungs are on the handlebars, and your watch announces with a fanfare: “New FTP: 240 watts.” You feel great. You have a number. You have data. But I have an uncomfortable question for you: Do you know what to do with that number tomorrow morning?
Many triathletes make a mistake here. They take this number, throw it into a calculator, and start training. Months later they can end up overtrained, injured, or stagnating.
As an IRONMAN Certified Coach at Atte ACADEMY, I’ll tell you why: An FTP test is just a photograph of one moment. It’s not a film about your fitness.
An app calculates the data for you. But only an experienced coach gives it context.
Why the “Garmin coach” fails where a human expert begins
The algorithms in modern watches are amazing, but they are dumb. They don’t see the bigger picture. When you download a generic plan or follow only your watch, you run into three problems the algorithm can’t see:
1. The “bad day” factor
Your watch doesn’t know you had a stressful day at work, slept badly, or are coming down with something. If you test on a “bad day,” your zones will be underestimated and you’ll train too easy. If you test on a day when you’re “overmotivated” and go out too hard, your zones will be too high and you’ll burn out. My job: I analyze not just watts, but also your subjective feeling (RPE) and heart rate. I can tell when a test isn’t valid. Safety: a maximal test is hard, so check with a doctor first if you have health concerns, and stop if you feel unwell.
2. The lie called decoupling (aerobic decoupling)
Two completely different athletes can have the same FTP (say, 250 W).
Athlete A (the endurance type): Holds 200 W at a heart rate of 140 for a whole hour.
Athlete B (the strength type): Holds 200 W, but after 30 minutes his heart rate shoots up to 170, even though the watts are the same.
If both trained on the same plan, Athlete B could burn out. My job: At Atte ACADEMY I track your aerobic decoupling. If I see that your heart can’t keep up with the watts, I don’t care about FTP. I prescribe specific base-building training until the “engine” is fixed.
High watts are pointless if you grind them out with brute force. Read why high cadence and how to train it are the key to sustaining power.
3. TTE (Time to Exhaustion)
In theory, FTP defines the power you can hold for 60 minutes. The reality? Many amateurs can’t hold it for a full hour. If I set intervals at 95% of FTP, assuming that’s your “one-hour power,” I’m actually sending you into anaerobic hell, which won’t help you at an Ironman.
Even the best FTP won’t help if you run out of “gas.” Check out my strategy for nutrition on the bike so you can sustain that power.
An investment in certainty, not in trial and error
Owning a €500 power meter without a coach is like buying a scalpel and thinking you’re a surgeon. You have the tool, but you don’t know how to use it safely.
At Atte ACADEMY you don’t pay for an Excel spreadsheet. You pay for the expert supervision of a certified IRONMAN Coach.
What do you get from me?
Objectivity: I’ll tell you when you have “good numbers” but feel bad, and when it’s time to ease off even though your watch screams “Train!”
Safety: I set your zones so that you can improve steadily and lower the risk of injury.
Understanding: I’ll explain why we go slow today so that we can go fast tomorrow.
Stop guessing. Train by science.
Maybe you think only pros need a coach, the ones going for a Kona slot. The opposite is true. A pro has time to recover and to fix mistakes. You have a job, a family, and limited time. You can’t afford to train “fluff” or “junk miles.”
I’m Ivan Hrušovský. My job isn’t just to put workouts in your calendar. My job is to analyze your data and guide you to the finish line by the most efficient route.
Do you feel lost in the numbers and your form is stagnating?
