How to Prepare for a Triathlon as a Beginner

If you are tired of one sport, try three at once! Triathlon combines swimming, cycling and running, and you have to get through them in that order. It is a demanding sport that takes preparation, but the feeling of victory at the finish line is that much stronger. If you are a beginner, here are some tips on how to get ready.

What you will learn in this article:

  • What gear do you need for a race?
  • When and what should you eat and drink?
  • How to put together a checklist
  • When to look for a triathlon coach

What gear do you need for a triathlon?

When it comes to gear, focus on the essentials you will need in training and on race day. It is easy to get carried away with accessories, but the basics are enough to start.

Tri-suit

An all-in-one tri-suit is ideal for all three disciplines. It is comfortable for swimming, cycling and running, so you save time in the transitions between them. Tri-suits are made of quick-drying, comfortable material.

Swimming

Swimming is the first discipline, so it is important not to start with too much effort. Learn to use the same gear in training and in races so you get used to it. Never swim alone in open water, and build up cold-water exposure gradually.

  • Wetsuit: If you will be swimming in open water, you will need a wetsuit. It helps keep your body temperature right and gives you gentle buoyancy. Choose a wetsuit that fits well: snug enough, but not restricting your movement. Our recommendation is the HUUB brand.
  • Swim goggles: Goggles are a must. Triathlon goggles have wider lenses for better peripheral vision. Clear lenses suit cloudy days, while mirrored lenses protect against the sun.
  • Swim cap: Most races provide swim caps, but it is a good idea to have your own. If you plan to race at Challenge Šamorín, a neoprene cap for the cold water will definitely come in handy.

Cycling

After the swim comes the bike, where you can rest a little, but the right gear matters here too.

  • Triathlon (time trial) bike: An aerodynamic bike that minimizes air resistance and increases speed is ideal. If you want to save time, you can choose a bike with aero bars, which improve your position on the bike.
  • Helmet: You cannot race without a cycling helmet. For triathlon, it helps to choose an aerodynamic helmet that reduces air resistance.
  • Cycling shoes: For triathlon I recommend cycling shoes with quick closures, which make it easier to put them on and take them off during a race.

Running

Running is the last discipline, and you have to save enough energy for it.

  • Running shoes: The right footwear is key. It must be comfortable and give you good support. Elastic laces are useful to save time when tying them.
  • Something for your head: A cap protects you from the sun, which can be very intense during the run.

Nutrition and hydration

Nutrition is just as important as the gear itself. Keeping track of what and when to eat and drink can decide your performance.

  • Before training: Eat light carbohydrates.
  • During training and races: Focus on quick energy replacement with simple sugars. Do not forget to drink, but avoid overdrinking, which can lead to a heavy feeling and, in extreme cases, hyponatremia. Follow sodium guidance, and see a doctor if you are unsure.
  • Before the race: Many athletes eat at least 90 minutes before the start so they have enough energy for the race.

Checklist and preparation

Make a checklist for every training session and race. That way you will not forget any necessary gear and your preparation will go smoothly.

One week before the race: Check your bike, go over your gear, and try out your race clothing and shoes. Get used to the transition between disciplines so you are ready for the race.

Two days before the race: Sleep well, eat healthy food and do not forget to walk through the race course. Keep a positive mindset.

The day before the race: Check all your gear and pack a bag with the essentials: tri-suit, water bottle, energy gels and bars, goggles, race number, helmet and warm clothes.

Race day: Eat breakfast, prepare well for all the disciplines and stay focused.

Find a triathlon coach

Get an expert who will help you find your way through the initial chaos of triathlon. Coaches give you far more than training plans. They have the expertise to help you succeed. They are here to answer all your questions and advise you on how to reduce injury risk. The main benefits a coach gives you include:

  • Analyzing your swimming and identifying areas to improve so you become a more efficient swimmer and handle open-water swimming better.
  • Helping you maximize your performance on the bike without compromising your ability to run after the cycling leg.
  • Making sure your running training is adjusted so that it helps you progress and improve your running technique.

Triathlon is popular for its unique combination of disciplines, each requiring specific focus, training and gear. We are a club with an IRONMAN Certified Coach, who will gladly point you in the right direction.
